Super Smash Bros. NES is an unofficial game created by Rebirth Gaming. The game is based on the Super Smash Bros. series. The game features many characters such as Mario and Samus, and they are all based on their appearance from the NES. The game was released on January 12, 2008.

[edit] Gameplay

Super Smash Bros. NES's gameplay is very similar to that of the official Super Smash Bros. games. Unlike other fighting games, damage is measured by percentage and fighting focuses more on hitting enemies off the stage. The higher the percentage, the easier it is to knock enemies off the stage.

In keeping with the fact that it was made to be an NES game, there are only two attack buttons and movement is used arrow keys (or J,K,L,I for a second player). The "Z" key is used, for most characters, as an attack that can be charged up; when playing with two people the left mouse button is used for a second player. Charged attacks can deal more damage, but it leaves the player idle and thus vulnerable to other attacks. Over-Z attacks depends on the character and it differs for each character. The "X" key executes a weak, but quick attack that can be used in rapid succession; when playing with two people the right mouse button is used for a second player. By crouching and pressing the "X" key, one can shield.

[edit] Characters

[edit] Starter Characters:

Each character has a different play style, jump height, and speed.

[edit] Unlockables:

  • Balloon Fighter - Balloon Fight - Go through all warp points
  • Ryu - Ninja Gaiden - Beat Adventure Mode in under 9 minutes
  • Pit - Kid Icarus - Play 50 Vs. Matches
  • Rash - Battletoads - Defeat 1000 enemies

[edit] Stages

[edit] Confirmed Stages

  • Mushroom Kingdom - This stage is based off of the Mario series. It is a flat stage with not much to see. There are many springs located on the stage which one can use to jump higher than usual and occasionally, one may see a Piranha Plant appear out of the pipes.
  • Hyrule Castle - Hyrule Castle is a large, towering stage based on the Zelda series. There are many platforms on this level and there is a hidden passageway in which characters can use to attack and be unnoticeable to the opponent.
  • Orange Ocean - Orange Ocean is a stage based off the Kirby series. A stage with many platforms and blocks that fall from the sky. At some points water rises altering the physics of the characters underwater.
  • Brinstar - Brinstar is a stage based on the Metroid series. In this stage the one main hazard is the constant, raising acid. It is best to stay up on the top platform to keep yourself away from the acid.
  • Megaman Stage (name unknown) - A stage with spikes, platforms, and gears. When touched, the spikes damage you and the gears move you at a certain direction when atop them, similar to the moving platforms on Pokémon Stadium 2.

[edit] Unlockable Stages

  • Balloon Zone - Balloon Zone is a small stage with a central platform above the water based on the Balloon Fight game. A cloud hovers above the stage which may occasionally shoot out a bolt of lightning across the stage damaging the player if he or she touches it. If one was to fall in the water the giant fish would come out and drag you in. It is unlocked by getting Balloon Fighter.
  • NES Console - The NES Console is a stage in which the characters fight upon an NES. In the background, images from other NES games fly through the air. This stage is large and flat with no stage hazards at all. It can be compared to Final Destination. This stage is unlocked by collecting 20 cards and then viewing your card collection by going to Options, then Records and then pressing the C button.
  • Turbo tunnel - An odd small flat stage that looks mainly like the inside of a throat. It is unlocked by getting Rash
  • At Hope's End - This stage consists of two platforms of rock looking over a moonlit background. It is unlocked by getting Ryu.
  • Angel Land A stage based off Kid Icarus. It is unlocked by getting Pit.
  • Warp Zone A stage based on the Warp Zones found within the game. It is unlocked by collecting all 30 cards. There will be no announcement when it is unlocked.

[edit] Game Modes

There are three game modes in Super Smash Bros. NES.

  • Adventure Mode - Adventure mode features stages based on the Mario, Zelda, Megaman, Metroid, and Kirby series each ending with a boss. In the Mario stage Bowser attacks with flames across the stage until you catch up with him, Mario then defeats Bowser and you have to fight Mario. In the Zelda stage, you first fight a Stalfos and after it is defeated Dark Link appears and you must defeat him, occasionally enemies will come down to distract you from Dark Link. In the Kirby stage, Meta Knight appears but instead of fighting him you must fight Kirby. It should be noted that Metaknight was originally a boss in the first public demo. The next level is a two part Megaman stage with Megaman and Zero as Bosses. The next stage is a Metroid level with a boss battle against Mother Brain. The final level is a boss battle with Master Hand.
  • Break the Targets - It is very similar to the ones seen in the official games. The player must utilize each character's own abilities in order to break a certain amount of targets. Through practice, one can beat each character's records in less time.
  • Multiplayer - In this mode a player has the choice to battle with up to four other characters. Since the NES had two controllers, the game supports another human player that can fight as well.
