Warning, this page contains plot spoilers for Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, regarding the Black Knight's identity.

The Black Knight is Daein's most powerful general. The Black Knight's identity is never spoken of, save for the fact that he was once a student of General Gawain (Greil) and is now the most powerful of Daein's Four Riders. He wears a special suit of full-body black armor that has been blessed by the goddess, making it impenetrable to all weapons save those that have also been blessed, such as Ragnell. He also has access to numerous other arcane items as well, such as the Warp Powder he uses to travel, his sword Alondite, and the sword Ragnell which he gives to Greil seemingly as an act of mercy (but mostly for an interesting battle). After killing Greil, he becomes Ike's mortal enemy, and he spends much of the game performing acts to enable Ashnard's efforts, such as providing Ashnard with blessed armor much like his own. Ashnard, after a comment from General Petrine about the Black Knight's strength, said he would be interested in challenging the Knight some day.

Ike engages the Black Knight in a duel after capturing a Daein castle. Although it was thought that the Black Knight was buried in the falling debris of the fortress, the Black Knight had survived. He aided Micaiah several times in her hours of need in an attempt to free Daien from Begnion's tyrannical grasp. Atop the Tower of Guidance, Ike once again challenges and kills the Black Knight. It was revealed that the Black Knight was actually Begnion's General Zelgius, acting under the commands of Prime Minister Sephiran, who is in fact the modern-day guise of the ancient Heron figure and keeper of the Fire Emblem, Lehran. Lehran, having observed the denizens of the world over the ages, has come to believe that they all are unsalvageably immoral for all the wars they fought, so he sent his subordinate Zelgius to Daein as a spy that would help influence Ashnard to begin the war in Path of Radiance in the first place; the war would have awakened the Dark God sealed within Lehran's Medallion, the Fire Emblem, and effectively signify doomsday for the races of Tellius, if Ike didn't end up stopping it.

The Black Knight and his alter-ego Zelgius are both an immensely powerful and sturdy soldier with abilities far beyond a normal Beorc. Zelgius is revealed to be a Branded, an individual who was born of parents both Beorc and Laguz, thus attributing to his superhuman battling ability. He is also a very noble and selfless soldier. For example, as the Black Knight he makes it a point to serve and protect Micaiah as Daein's future queen, while as Zelgius he spares the Laguz lion warrior Skrimir during their duel, when it would have been easy to kill the opposing party's leader and win. He also refuses to fight an unarmed Queen Elincia in direct defiance to the orders of Begnion Senator Valtome, and he was about to accept the fate of being executed for treason when saved by allies of Ike. In general, in both guises he follows the vast majority of his orders without question, regardless of his personal opinions.

Nevertheless, his true motive and agenda is to prove his strength against the one who mentored him in the art of fighting, Ike's father Gawain (alias: Greil). He confronted Gawain to battle him for this purpose, but as Gawain had lost his own fighting ability, the Black Knight killed him very easily, to the Black Knight's disappointment. Desiring some way to determine for good whether his or Greil's fighting technique is the superior one, from that point on he pays special attention to Gawain's son Ike, engaging him in duels at several specific points in both Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn to observe Ike's growth in his father's techniques. Near the end of Radiant Dawn, Ike and the unmasked Zelgius engage in a final duel, with Ike and Ragnell triumphing over Zelgius and Alondite. Zelgius is frankly thankful to Ike for giving him the battle he wanted, and is content to pass away while his sword is passed on to the rest of Ike's party.

One of Daein's Four Riders and wielder of the blessed sword Ettard. Once an apprentice to Ike's father, Greil, the two eventually duel, resulting in Greil's defeat. Thought to be dead after losing to Ike and the blessed sword Ragnell, the Black Knight survives and comes to the aid of Micaiah, the leader of the Dawn Brigade, a band of Daein freedom fighters.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Wii)

Note: The Black Knight's Sword, Ettard, goes by the name of Alondite in the English versions of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. It's known as Ettard in the Japanese version of the games, and the inconsistency comes about from the fact that the localization group for Brawl was different from the group that localizes the Fire Emblem series in the US. (Ettard, in fact, is the name given to the initial sword Ike starts out with in the North American version of Radiant Dawn, which likewise has the name "Alondite" in the Japanese version,)

The Black Knight is also a collectible sticker.
